High quality teaching

All of our courses encourage and support students in developing the knowledge and skills essential for successful careers in a global workplace. This means that whatever you choose to study, your course will include opportunities for work-related learning, which could be through a formal placement or sandwich year, voluntary experience, project or internship, or within one of our simulated environments. In addition to this, leaders and inspirational individuals from business or specific academic fields regularly visit the University.

You'll find a whole range of opportunities open to you as part of your studies and alongside your course. Many of our students develop their entrepreneurial aspirations through enterprise projects or learn another language through our Institution-Wide Language Programme. There are also study abroad schemes where you could get to spend a semester or year in a different country, as well as field trips in certain subjects.

Student satisfaction

Our students report very high levels of satisfaction about the quality of teaching on their courses, the approachability of staff and academic support. Our reputation for teaching and student support is something we really value. For the fifth year running, our students have reported very high levels of satisfaction in the National Student Survey. Both full and part-time students were asked to rank their satisfaction in a range of areas from specific subjects to academic support and their satisfaction overall was 85 per cent, higher than the national average of 83 per cent.

The results place Portsmouth within the top 30 mainstream English universities for student satisfaction, making us one of the top modern universities. Many of the University’s taught subjects also rank in the top 10 per cent in the country in terms of overall satisfaction.

Academic guidance

All new students are allocated a personal tutor. Your tutor will provide you with advice and guidance, and encourage you to get the most out of your course and help you achieve your goals.

Learn with experts

At Portsmouth our research informs our teaching in number of ways. You will be taught by people at the forefront of their field; some of our students even get involved in externally-funded research projects working with our experts as part of their course or as paid research assistants. In other instances, they appear as co-authors on published papers – another strength you could possibly add to your CV.
